Sam Cooke (1931-1964) è stato un leggendario cantante, compositore e produttore discografico statunitense, considerato uno dei pionieri del soul music. Nato a Clarksdale, Mississippi, Cooke iniziò la sua carriera musicale cantando gospel nella chiesa locale. Nel 1957, firmò con il label Saratoga Records, pubblicando successi come "You Send Me" che lo consacrò come una stella pop. Cooke ha poi fondato la propria etichetta discografica, The Soul Stirrers, continuando a incidere brani gospel di grande successo. Nel corso degli anni '60, Cooke si affermò come uno dei più grandi artisti soul con album come "Ain't That Good News" e "Live at the Harlem Square Club", caratterizzati da melodie avvolgenti e testi profondamente emozionali. Il suo stile vocale ricco e potente, la sua sensibilità musicale e le sue canzoni che affrontavano temi sociali come l'uguaglianza razziale lo hanno reso un'icona culturale di grande rilevanza. Cooke fu assassinato nel 1964 all'età di 33 anni, lasciando un vuoto incolmabile nella musica americana.
