Captain and Tennille are a husband and wife duo who were extremely popular back in the 70's and 80's with hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "The Way That I Want To Touch You", "Shop Around" and "Muskrat Love". They met in San Francisco in 1971 when Toni(Tennille) needed a keyboard player for the musical she had co-written called Mother Earth. Daryl Dragon was recommended to her and he flew up to meet and auditon for her. He was a keyboard player for the Beach Boys and was between tours at the moment but when the show ended he contacted Toni and asked if she would be interested in joining their tour as a piano player. He spent a lot of time teaching her the parts and she got the job and toured with them for a year. When the tour with the Beach Boys was over Toni and Daryl returned to California and began to work as a duo in small clubs. They had begun a relationship together personally as well as professionally and had attracted quite a local following performing at a club called The Smokehouse in Encino. Toni had written a song for Daryl while on the road with the Beach Boys called "The Way I Want To Touch You" which described her growing feelings for him and the couple gathered their own money together and pressed their own recording of the song and took it to local radio stations and amazingly got airplay. The stations began to get some really hot calls on the song and they were offered a recording deal with several labels but chose A&M Records because they agreed that Daryl could produce the first album. The first album entitled "Love Will Keep Us Together" was a huge success and launched Captain and Tennille into superstardom. Contrary to publicized reports Toni and Daryl were not married until after the success of the album. They married on November 11, 1975 in Virginia City Nevada in the Silver Queen Saloon wedding chapel there with no family or friends present. Still together and married now for 33 years love has definately kept them together. They have pretty much retired from performing and recording and prefer to live a once again normal life at their beautiful new home in Prescott Arizona. Captain and Tennille remain one of the most popular and successful duos of all time and their music remains a beautiful and lasting legacy of pure joy and pop gold and the reminder of better and more gentle times.
