Public Image Ltd. (PIL), abbreviazione di Public Image Limited, è un gruppo musicale britannico formatosi a Londra nel 1978 dal cantante e frontman John Lydon, meglio noto come Johnny Rotten per il suo periodo nei Sex Pistols. Dopo lo scioglimento dei Pistols, Lydon decise di fondare PIL con l'obiettivo di esplorare nuovi territori musicali, abbandonando la rabbia punk in favore di un sound più sperimentale e introspettivo. PIL ha attraversato diverse fasi stilistiche nel corso della sua carriera, passando dal post-punk aggressivo ai ritmi elettronici, influenzati da sonorità reggae e dub. Tra i brani più rappresentativi del gruppo ricordiamo "Rise", "This Is Not a Love Song" e "Public Image". L'album di debutto omonimo (1978) è considerato un classico del post-punk, mentre "Metal Box" (1979) è un lavoro ancora più sperimentale e innovativo. PIL ha avuto un impatto significativo sulla musica alternativa degli anni '80 e continua ad essere una band di culto per i suoi fan.
