Stephen Joshua Sondheim (New York, 22 marzo 1930 – New York, 26 novembre 2021) è stato un compositore, paroliere e drammaturgo statunitense considerato uno dei più importanti autori del teatro musicale del XX secolo. La sua influenza sullo sviluppo del genere del musical moderno è fondamentale. Sondheim ha composto alcune delle opere più significative del panorama teatrale americano della seconda metà del Novecento, tra cui *A Little Night Music*, *Sweeney Todd* e *Into the Woods*. Ha collaborato anche come paroliere con compositori di fama mondiale come Leonard Bernstein per *West Side Story* e Jule Styne per *Gypsy: A Musical Fable*. Oltre al teatro musicale, Sondheim ha composto colonne sonore originali per film come *Stavisky il grande truffatore* (1974), *Reds* (1980) e *Dick Tracy* (1990). Per quest'ultimo scrisse la canzone *Sooner or Later*, che gli valse l'Oscar alla migliore canzone nel 1991. Tra i suoi brani più rappresentativi si ricordano *Send in the Clowns* da *A Little Night Music*, *The Ballad of Sweeney Todd* da *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street* e *Agony* da *Into the Woods*.
