Joseph Black (1728-1799) è stato un chimico e medico scozzese, considerato uno dei pionieri della chimica moderna. Nato a Edinburgh, si laureò in medicina all'Università di Edimburgo nel 1751. Iniziò la sua carriera come professore di medicina, ma presto si dedicò alla ricerca scientifica. Le sue scoperte più importanti riguardano l'anidride carbonica e il calore latente. Black dimostrò che l'anidride carbonica era un gas distinto dall'aria e che poteva essere prodotto dalla combustione del carbone. Inoltre, studiò il calore latente di fusione e di evaporazione, introducendo il concetto di energia termica latente. Le sue ricerche influenzarono profondamente lo sviluppo della chimica moderna e contribuirono a gettare le basi per la teoria dell'energia. Tra i suoi lavori più importanti ricordiamo "An Essay on the Principles of Chemistry" (1768).
