Fates Warning è una band di progressive metal formatasi a Hartford, Connecticut, nel 1983 da John Arch (voce), Jim Matheos (chitarra), Victor Arduini (basso), Joe DiBiase (batteria) e Steve Zimmerman (tastiere). Considerati pionieri del genere, hanno contribuito a definire il sound progressive metal con album come "Parallels" (1986) e "Awaken the Guardian" (1988), caratterizzati da melodie intricate, riff pesanti e testi filosofici. Dopo l'abbandono di Arch nel 1989, la band ha continuato a collaborare con diversi cantanti, tra cui Ray Alder, che ha contribuito a definire il sound più moderno del gruppo negli album "Inside Out" (1994) e "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" (1997).
