Il nucleo del progetto è costituito dal cantante, compositore e multi-strumentista Matt Johnson, l'unico membro fisso in tutte le formazioni del gruppo. The The ha attraversato diverse fasi stilistiche, passando da sonorità più sperimentali e elettroniche a un sound più rock e melodico. Tra i brani più rappresentativi si ricordano "This Is the Day", "Armageddon Days Are Here Again" e "Sweet Bird of Truth". Johnson è noto per le sue testi poetiche e introspettive, spesso incentrate su temi sociali e politici.
