Ambientato in un immaginario shtetl ebraico della Russia zarista (Anatevka) nel 1905, il musical trae spunto dal libro "Tevye e le sue figlie", in italiano "Tevye il lattaio ed altre storie", di Sholem Aleichem. La storia segue le vicende di Tevye, un ebreo povero che cerca di mantenere la sua famiglia unita nonostante le sfide sociali e culturali del suo tempo. Il musical esplora temi come l'amore, la tradizione, la religione e il cambiamento sociale.
