Testo A heart that never closes Mary Chapin Carpenter

A heart that never closes

Is it a trick of the light or some sleight of hand
Yesterday is in the rear view, you don't understand
How fast it all goes, need to catch your breath
Time is just a bandit trying to steal what's left

I'll keep it for you, can you keep it for me
Carrying each other, we can carry

Got my reasons for being all around this place
Books, dogs and coffee and a day full of rain
And when the clouds clear out got a night full of stars
I'm learning what to keep and what to let go of

I'll teach it to you, you can teach it to me
Carrying each other, we can carry

Acorns in the fall, old camp blankets
Wood smoke in my clothing, maples that I planted
Irises in summer, and a heart that catches
The screen door that's always missing its latches

All the flights of the starlings that appear in the evening
In the din of congregation I'll take more than I'm leaving
But not the bitter or broken, not the scars or the shame
I'll leave the windows wide open, you can do the same

I'm bringing it to you, you can bring it to me
Carrying each other, we can carry

The noise that filled the kitchen on some new year's eve
Forgotten resolutions that I never believed in
The silence in the hall at the end of the day
That says we're alone but it doesn't feel that way

I want to carry a life that doesn't do what its told
All the places and the songs and the stories we hold
And wishes thrown like brides throw their roses
Dreams I kept for no good reason and a heart that never closes

I'll carry it for you, you can carry it for me
Carrying each other, we can carry
