He was pushing eighty
but he acted twenty two
he could laugh and drink
just like his grandchildren could do
There was square hay on the meadow
second cutting of the year
well his summer work was over
when they got the pasture clear
they were drinking on the big bluff
cross the river from the field
well he walked up the edge
threw a stone and he kneeled
And he looked down at the water
said boys im going in
they were cheering when he jumped
but he did not come up again
chorus:
Well raise another round boys
and have another glass
be thankful for today
knowing it will never last
and lets leave the world laughing
when our eulogies are read
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead.
verse 2:
Well it was twenty after midnight.
And they were going eighty five
she was barely out of highschool
wantin bad to feel alive.
just a two lane piece of blacktop
a snakey stretch of road.
well the wind blew through the wing vents
it was clear and fresh and cold.
well the driver killed the headlights
and he put the throttle down.
when they hit the railroad crossin
they were five feet off the ground
just a screamin through the midnight
till they came down again
when the front tire hit the bar-ditch
they went end over end
chorus:
Well raise another round boys
and have another glass
be thankful for today
knowing it will never last
and lets leave the world laughing
when our eulogies are read
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead.
(Guitar Solo)
verse 3:
(BOOM) (BOOM) (BOOM) ....
Well Im twenty eight years old now
I was born in eighty four
and Ive been as free as I can be
and I wont ask for anymore
So let the fiddle play hoooooe down
after I draw my last breath
well tell everyone I know
that I loved them all to death
Well raise another round boys
and have another glass
be thankful for today
knowing it will never last
and lets leave the world laughing
when our eulogies are read
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead.
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead.
may we all get to heaven
before the devil knows were dead.
