Throwing Muses è un gruppo rock alternativo formatosi a Newport, Rhode Island, nel 1981 da Kristin Hersh (voce, chitarra) e Tanya Donelly (chitarra, voce). Dopo l'ingresso di David Narcizo al basso e Michael Mountain alla batteria, la band ha pubblicato il suo album di debutto, *The Real Ramona*, nel 1986. Il loro sound, caratterizzato da riff chitarristici distorti, testi introspettivi e melodie orecchiabili, li ha rapidamente catapultati nell'underground rock americano. Tra i brani più rappresentativi si ricordano «Dizzy», «Metro», e «Your Hidden Needle Eye». Dopo una serie di album di successo negli anni '90, come *Hunkapiunk* (1989) e *University* (1991), la band ha cessato le attività nel 1997. Nel 2000 si sono riuniti per pubblicare nuovi album, tra cui *The Beauty of the Rain* (2006). La loro musica continua ad influenzare generazioni di musicisti indie e alternative.
