MercyMe is an American contemporary Christian band formed in 1994 when two of the founding members, Bart Millard and Jim Bryson, were working overseas at a Christian mission. Once home they completed the line-up and began to build a fanbase. Although they self released a number of albums in the years leading up to 2000, they signed their first record label deal in 2001 and found immediate success with their first album Almost There and the accompanying single "I can Only Imagine". They never scaled the double platinum success of this first studio outing but subsequent albums performed consistently well. Their consistent Christian message has resulted in many appearances on the US Christian charts, though they have achieved minimal crossover into the mainstream.
