Ghost in the Shell è un manga scritto e disegnato da Masamune Shirow, serializzato per la prima volta in Giappone sulla rivista Young Magazine dal 1989 al 1991. Successivamente è stato pubblicato in volume unico il 2 ottobre 1991 da Kodansha. Shirow ha continuato la serie con due sequel, pubblicati dal 1991 al 1997 su Young Magazine e poi raccolti in due volumi, Ghost in the Shell 2: ManMachine Interface nel 2001 e Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processer nel 2003.
