Steve Lacy (Steven Norman Lackritz, 1934-2006) è stato un sassofonista e compositore statunitense considerato uno dei più grandi interpreti del sassofono soprano. Nato a New York, Lacy si distinse per il suo stile innovativo che fonde jazz, musica afroamericana e influenze europee. La sua carriera ha attraversato diverse fasi: dagli esordi con i gruppi di Charles Mingus e Gil Evans, fino alla formazione del suo quintetto nel 1960. Con quest'ultimo Lacy ha esplorato nuove sonorità, introducendo elementi sperimentali e improvvisazione libera. Tra le sue opere più rappresentative si ricordano l'album "The Forest" (1972) e il brano "The Chant", un inno alla spiritualità afroamericana. Lacy è stato un pioniere del free jazz, influenzando generazioni di musicisti con la sua originalità e la sua ricerca sonora senza confini.
