Well, I come from, down around Palestine,
The days are long, and the dogs are mean,
There's a whole lot a' nothin', to do for fun,
Shootin' turtles off' a log, with my daddy's gun.
So when got bored we'd walk out back,
Hike to town on a railroad track,
Yeah, me n' my best friend, Billy Long,
Sometimes his little sister'd tag along.
We'd steal a pack of Kools, from the Sell-or-Buy,
Stand around smoking, in the parking lot,
When they'd run us off, we'd hit the pool hall,
And drink a cold Coca-Cola, leaning against the wall.
Then one night when Billy ..., wasn't there.
An' it was just me and Jenny, playing truth or dare,
Well, she said dare, and the very next thing,
Hopped a local, goin' out behind the Dairy Queen.
Palestine! Palestine!
I'm gonna' to lay my head, on the sandy bed,
And let the Neches, wash me clean.
Now the Moon was low, and the night was deep,
And it felt like the end, of a long, long sleep,
It felt like we we're, getting somewhere,
Picked up speed, and we got scared.
I jumped first, and I lost my feet,
Rolled through the gravel, on my hands and knees,
I tasted blood, and I tasted dirt,
I was trying to decide, if I was hurt.
And she jump off, in that Texas night,
But her shirt got hung, on a warning light,
She fell down, under the boxcars, and they'd
Drowned out, any kind of sound she made.
The train blew it's whistle as it pulled away,
Half an hour late for Galveston Bay,
I laid her in the gravel until the light were gone,
Got up and went to tell her mother what I'd done.
Palestine! Palestine!
I'm gonna' to lay my head, on the sandy bed,
And let the Neches, wash me clean.
[Instrumental Bridge]
We buried on Monday in a pouring rain,
Damn near half of the county came,
At the service they kept her casket closed,
We sang of faith and grace in our Sunday clothes.
And tonight I'm walking these tracks again,
I'm headed for a spot just around the bend,
Where the river deep 'neath the trestle spread,
I'm going to make a little peace with the ghost of the dead.
Palestine! Palestine!
I'm gonna' to lay my head, on the sandy bed,
And let the Neches, wash me clean.
Palestine! Palestine!
I'm gonna' to flow my soul, down to Mexico,
And let the Neches, wash me clean.
