Half Past Forever were a local rock band of little note until lead singer Chris Sligh auditioned for American Idol during its sixth season. His performance of Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" won a standing ovation from judge Paula Abdul and he progressed through to the final of the show, eventually coming tenth. Two weeks before he was voted off his band Half Past Forever had released their second album Take a Chance on Something Beautiful. Although Sligh had technically left the band due to American Idol rules, the album featured him heavily, and he re-joined after his spell on Idol finished. On the strength of Sligh's performances on national television, the band were signed by Brash Music and the album was re-released nationally.
