You were standing at the bathroom sink
Crying and yelling at me
For a second it was like we were in a
Coming of age movie
But who the hell are we?
Wandering around this big city
Acting like we got our lives together
Trying to find ourselves
In the letters of dead poets
Making friends with the cynics
In rent controlled apartments
Singing The National
And tellin' each other secrets
Like nobody’s ev?r lived this
Before
Young in th? state of the heart
Fighting with time so we take shots in the dark
And it feels alright cos’ this mess is ours
Young in the state of the heart
Yeah we run fast cos’ the cars don’t start
And we make up for what we don’t got
We know we are
Young in the state of the-
Slept out on the fire escape
That summer when the AC gave
You said to pretend that it was winter
But honey I was happy
To be just like us
Two kids dreaming while the metal rusts
Sure felt good to be lost together
Just trying to find ourselves
In the letters of dead poets
Making friends with the cynics
In rent controlled apartments
Singing The National
And tellin' each other secrets
Like nobody’s ever lived this
Before
Young in the state of the heart
Fighting with time so we take shots in the dark
And it feels alright cos’ this mess is ours
Young in the state of the heart
Yeah we run fast cos’ the cars don’t start
And we make up for what we don’t got
We know we are
Young in the state of the heart
Young in the state of the heart
Contemplated science, space and religion
Contemplated silence, space, how it all fits
Yeah we know our place, call us the misfits
But we’re livin'
Young in the state of the heart
Young in the state of the heart
Fighting the time so we take shots in the dark
And it feels alright cos’ this mess is ours
Young in the state of the heart
Fighting with time so we take shots in the dark
(And it feels alright cos’ this mess is ours)
This mess is ours
Young in the state of the heart
