Tom Waits (nato Thomas Alan Waits il 7 dicembre 1949) è un cantautore, musicista e attore statunitense considerato uno dei più influenti artisti del panorama musicale contemporaneo. Conosciuto per la sua voce roca e inimitabile, le sue performance teatrali e le sue canzoni caratterizzate da atmosfere dark e surreali, Waits ha attraversato diverse fasi musicali, dal blues al jazz, passando per il rock sperimentale e l'avant-garde. La sua carriera musicale inizia negli anni '60 con la formazione di gruppi come The Tom Waits Band e poi come musicista solista. Nel corso degli anni '70 e '80 raggiunge un successo crescente grazie a album come "Closing Time" (1973), "Heartattack and Vine" (1981) e "Rain Dogs" (1985). Negli anni successivi, Waits si dedica anche alla recitazione, partecipando a film di registi come Wim Wenders e Francis Ford Coppola. Tra i suoi brani più rappresentativi ricordiamo "Tom Traubert's Blues", "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You", "Hold On" e "Martha”. Waits è stato insignito di numerosi premi, tra cui il Grammy Award per la vita e l'opera.
