Patti Smith (Patricia Lee Smith) è una cantautrice, poetessa e artista statunitense nata a Chicago nel 1946. Considerata un'icona del rock alternativo, ha influenzato generazioni di musicisti con il suo stile unico che fonde punk, poesia e performance teatrale. Nel decennio settanta, Smith si è affermata come figura chiave del movimento proto-punk e della New wave, guadagnandosi il soprannome di "sacerdotessa maudite del rock" per il suo carisma interpretativo e la profondità dei suoi testi. Il suo album di debutto, *Horses* (1975), è considerato un classico del genere e contiene brani iconici come "Gloria", "Because the Night" e "Piss Factory". Smith ha collaborato con artisti come Bruce Springsteen, Iggy Pop e Fred Sonic Smith. La sua carriera si è estesa oltre la musica, includendo anche l'attività di scrittrice e artista visiva. Tra i suoi album più importanti ricordiamo *Radio Ethiopia* (1976), *Easter* (1978) e *Wave* (2004).
